Vanguard was first in the straight for home, when a desperate struggle ensued with Takapau, but Vanguard staying the longest succeeded in winning by half-a-length. Time, 4min 3sec. When the flag fell, Prudence rushed to the front, and she led till round the home turn. Here Dolosa and Teksum joined issue with the leader, and the whips being brought out a desperate struggle ensued home, Prudence gaining the judge’s verdict by a- short head, a similar distance separating Dolosa and Teksum. At the back of the course, Patchwork dropped into last place, and when the stand was reached Lochness still led, Montrose being second and Leorina third. Lochness held his position till half-way down the straight, when Montrose almost drew level, but he could not pass Lachness, who won by a neck. Patchwork was third and Leorina fourth. When . the flag dropped, Recruit : was quickest to move, followed by Rossiter and Takapau. The trio alternately led for the greater - part of the journey, with Messenger last. Larrikin went to the front,, ascending the hill for the last time, but at the water jump he fell, throwing his rider. Recruit was first over the obstacle just mentioned, being closely pressed by Takapau, Afc the far _B*de of the course proper, Takapau drew level with Recruit, when it could be plainly seen that there was trouble between Fergus, the rider of Takapau. The pair raced, together fer a few strides,, but Takapau soon forged ahead, while Recruit and Fergus fell. ■■ This left Takapau to run home an easy winner l from Rossiter by eight'or ten lengths. Messenger was third, and the other* did not finish. Fergus was carried to the stewards room, but no sooner was it reached than he rose and made for the jockeys’ room, and had a scuffle with Johnson, but the police interfered. The dividend was £3 7s. Fairy Queen, Leorina, and Dolosa were quickest to leave the mark, and the trio made the running, followed by Teksum. Leorina was first to enter the home turn, but Teksum got on terms in the straight, and won by a iength. Dividend, £3 2s. In the race for the Steeplechase a scene occurred between Fergus, the rider of Recruit, and Johnston, the rider of Takapau, The stewards of the Club very promptly took the matter in hand, and held a meeting. The outcome was the following decision arrived at“ That S. Fergus, the rider of Recruit, be disqualified for three months, and one month for striking Johnson, the rider of Takapau; and that Johnson, the rider of Takapau, be cautioned for striking Fergus with his whip in the race while he held the bridle of Takapau.” The result of the inquiry was made known last night to the Secretary of the Auckland Racing Club.
