B HIPPONA. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB JUBILEE MEETING. Auckland, January 18. Horse-owners responded most liberally last night for the several everts of the A.R.C Jubilee tace-meeting, which comes off at Ellerslie on Thursday, 30th in«t. Th e total number of entries received is 98, and there is the material for some excellent contests. Messrs Jackson and Co. offer the privileges for the gathering next Friday, and as the gates are thrown open free to the public, no doubt some spirited competition will be brought about. THE WELLINGTON CUP. Last night the first acc pfcance for the Wellington Cup fell due The following rftmain in • _

With such an excellent acceptance, there is promise of a good field seeing the post for the event. Both Lady Noiah and Leopold must take a lot of beating, and their most formidable opponent, I think, will be l)udu. THE DUNEDIN CUP.

This year’s Dunedin Cup acceptances look mean alongside those at Wellington. It is agieed o • all hands that Mr Dowse has taken a great liberty with Merrie England in 1 tting him off with 7st 101 b, because he has been under a cloud. It only requires thehorsetobe Sr and well, and his opponents would have little chance with him. St. James has been made nominal favouiito in the South for the race, but he is an unreliable customer. If Merrie England does not come sound to the post, I think O ;cident wil- win. The entries received for the other principal ev nts of the meeting are exceedingly good, and total up only ten less than last year. The only North Island representatives in the lists are Lady Florin and Forester.

If an illustration is wanted of the way Dunedinites, or O.ago, I should say, band together when required, it can plainly be seen in the way the local Jock y Club have stood by their handieapper, Mr George Dowse. Despite the pressure that was brought to bear on them by the moa r ' influential racing men in the colony to have Mr D iwse dis missed, the D.J.C. have stood their ground, and at their annual meeting this week reappointed him to the position. One cannot htlpadmiring thepluckof theDunedinClub, for the decision was come to in tlio very midst of their trouble. The more so is the Club to be commended when we think oi other weak-kneed Nsw Zealand racing institutions that have thrown up the ghost by eiriier dismissing their servants or placing restrict ons upon them, simnly because some grievance has cropped up. Judging from the remarks that fell from the lips of the Hon. G. McLean at the meeting, he sincerelv wishes an amicable feeling to once more reign between the aggrieved horse-owners and the D.J.C., and his remarks were of such a moderate and sensible tone they must bear weight.

ONEHUNGA RACING CLUB SUMMER MEETING. Auckland, January 20. Between 200 and 300 spectators attended the Summer Meeting of the Onehunga Racing Club on Saturday. There was great delay in starting the races, and it was seven in the evening when the last event was rie lided. Mr W. Blomfield worked t‘>e totaTsa ors satisfactorily; the tickets being ten shillings. Appended are results of the concluding races : Handicap Pony Race- of- 15sovs. For ponies Id han s 2 inches and under.* Six and a-half furlongs.

Dividend, £2 19s. BUS OF TURF. I learn that Cuirassier will be sent over to Melbourne short ly, but J. Kean will not accompany him. It is very questionab e if any other Kohimarama-trained hurees are likely to be sent over. MrHiggire has dealt very harshly with Leopold and Hilda in the Egmonb Handii ap, and he also has not forgotten some of the Aucklanders in the Flying Handicap. Otherwise the compilation is not a bad one, and there should be fair acceptances. Takapau, who has won one or two races in the Taranaki district, is to be brought up here during the forthcoming week to take part in the Jubilee meetings. Leop Id, Corunna, Fabulous, <*Fusee and Lady Norah are to b« taken to Wellington to take part in the meeting there next month.

(J. War en, the well-known cro-s-country horseman, goes over in tharge of the blood stuck purchased here by Messrs Wilson Bros. It is Warren’s intention to sett e in Australia, and being a steady man he should get on well, The jumper Volcano is under a cloud, having met with a mishap in the A. R C. Summer Steeplechase, it will be noticed he was not entered for the Juhilee Hurdles la-t night. Volcano is located at George Hope's stables. Acceptances and general entries for the Takapuna Jubilee Meeting close next Friday. The feature of the recent a'terations at Randwick is the new racing track. This is a mile an i tluee furlongs round, made up ol two splendid straights and easy turns. The straight run home from the Derby turn is 132 ft wide, and the cour-e is lOOlt wide in the narrowest part. When the ground has been thoroughly prepared there wid be a width of fully 20 It at the mile post. From the starling po nt there is a straight run of three furlongs, and about 110 ft wide. “Sporting Echo” fancies that Manton will turn out a very unprofitable investment for Mr VV. J. Woolcotr. Since the Maorilati.ler has been placed under Mr W. Dakm’s care he ha- paid the usual penalty therefor—that is to say, the handicapper sees that he, at all events, is properly taken care of. Jockeys and horses encountered a rather strange experience while contesting the Foston Plate at Derby on November 13th. There were nine starters, but owing to the thick fog at the back of the course the whole lot lost their way, some going one way and some another. An animal named Cromartie was the first to reach the winning post, but the stewards ultimately declared the race void. A race meeting is bring arranged to take place at Whitford Paik in the middle of February. Those who have the arrange ments in hand are drawing up a suitable programme.
