Mr Appleby, dairyman, of Mount Albert, sustained a heavy loss last night by the burning of a stack of hay worth about £BO. Theori.in of the fire is unknown, but Mr Appleby believes the conflagration must have been caused by carelessness on the part of some vagrant, who had been sleepng in the hay overnight, and neglected to take proper precautions when lighting his pipe. The hay was stacked a veiy short time previously, and there was no insurance on it, so that there is a tota 1 10-s to the owner. Fortunately the hay stack was a safe distance away from Mr App eby’s house, and consequently burned itself out without doing any damage to adjacent property. A large steamer called the Duburg, with 400 p<ssengeis, is reported by the s.s. Guthrie at Sydney, from Hongkong, to be Dotally lost with all hands in the China Sea. Ashing ton was sen tin search of the Duburg, and returned to Hongkong a few days before the Guthrie left there. Nothing whatever was met with. There is no doubt that the Duburg, with her teeming human freight and all her crew, foundered in mid-sea. The floating bundles of rattans which have been sighted by .passing steamers from Singapore ar-> pro- ably the only trace of her that will ever be found. The Duburg was a vessel of 1,097 tons burden, and had for some years been employed in the .China trade. She iwas commanded by Captain B rtelson, Jand cleared from Singapore on-the 25th October for Amoy, via Hongkong.
