THE LATE HON. W. ROBINSON.

Referring to the death of the Hon. \V. Robinson, the London “Sportsman” says :—“ He took a great part in Australian turf matters, but to many of our readers will be better remembered as the owner of that good mare Gratitude, who was backed to win a fortune, but was beaten by a head by Thalestris for the Cesarewitch of 1864, and the following year was beaten a similar distance by Salpinctes for the same race. Gratitude, however, won the Royal Hunt Cup for Mr Robinson in 1865, and the same year Eltham carried his colours successfully in the Queen’s Vase, after running a dead heat with Baron Rothschild’s Breeze, having previously finished third in the Derby won by Gladiateur. Eltham, it may be remarked, was bought out of a selling race at Newmarket by Mr Robinson, who had run second with a colt by Hobbie Noble from Yarra Yarra. Mr Kent claimed the Yarra Yarra colt, and Mr Robinson’s cast-off subsequently became notorious under the name of Kangaroo, for whom the Marquis of Hastings gave 12,000g5.”
