THE ENGLISH TWO-YEAR OLDS.

The special commissioner of the London “Sporting Life,” in a review of “The Two-year-olds of the Season,” concludes that Signorina is by far and away the best filly of her year, her running in the Middle Park Plate proving this very conclusively. Semolina, Rivera, Surefoot, LeNord, and Heaume go to make up a first-class half-dozen. On this subject “Rapier” thus writes: “The best judges of races are often wrong. Of coui'se, two - year - old form is a constant theme of discussion, and I never heard a more unanimous opinion than that to the effect that Semolina would nob last through the season in the front rank. After Erica had pressed her down the Epsom Hill it really did look as if her measure had been taken, and though she was as good a favourite as Surefoot for the Ascot Biennial, it was, I am sure, public money, the investments of those who followed the lucky Duke, that made her so. Her poorish show in the Middle Park seemed to justify the maker of the Free Handicap in putting her so long a way below Signorina, who was set to give her Ist 61b, though in the season —the London season, I mean—the question whether Semolina or Signorina was the better animal afforded endless ground for argument. However, she is another instance of the few Brocklesby winners that have trained on and distinguished themselves at the Newmarket back-end meetings. Authorities have it that ‘ the later and best two-year-old of any year, the winner of the Middle Park Plate for instance ’ —it is by no means always the case that the very best two-year-old of. the season is entered for and wins the Middle Park, but this year it was so— ‘ is generally about 2st in front of the good early form.’ The Bard, Donovan, and Semolina have been exceptions to this general rule.”
