PUHIPUHI SILVER FIELD.
SPECIMENS OF NATIVE SILVERWhangakki, Jan. 7. Some fine specimens containing native silver were brought from tire prospectors’ claim at Puhipuhi on Saturday. This is the first discovery of native silver. The oro containing it is precisely similar to Broken Hill ore. The specimens of the latter put alongside of Puhipuhi ore show the two to be precisely alike. The native silver is on the face of the ore like frosted silver. Tire further the silver reef at Puhipuhi is driven in, the better it gets. The “Advocate” states the prospectors have applied for their lease, and it publishes Mr Rhodes’s complete assays made of Puhipuhi ore for the Government. The discovery of native silver similar to Broken Hill ore has caused considerable excitement. A KAWAKAWA MOVE. PROPOSAL TO OPEN THE NORTHERN PART OF PUHIPUHI. Iyawakawa, Jan. 7. As it is reported that all prospectors are ordered to be out of Puhipuhi because the term of the license is up and the summer has set in, and the Cabinet meeting is about to be held at Wellington, it is suggested here that the Northern members should avail themselves of the opportunity to induce the Government to open Puhipuhi north of Tangiapakura River, where the present mines are, as it is only mixed bush containing very little kauri. It is considered a great hardship to be turned out after the time and labour spent.
