ROMAN CATHOLIC BANK.

THE SCHEME REPUDIATED. A recent New York despatch says :—Archbishop Corrigan was seen this afternoon in regard to the statement published this morning, that a Roman Catholic bank with a capital of §100,000,000, was about to be started in this city, in which the Vatican would place all its money for investment in American enterprises to keep it safe from the possibility of seizure by the Italian Government, should there be a rupture. The Archbishop said : “ You can deny the whole thing most positively. I have never, in any shape or form, given any sanction or countenance to Leybourn’s scheme. Eugene Kelly, Mr Hogueb and James Lynch, who have been mentioned in connection with the matter, all state most positively that they would never approve it. The story that I have had friends in the Vatican pushing the scheme is an unmitigated falsehood. The Vatican has never written a line to me nor I to them in reference to this matter. This Papal benediction does nob amount to anything, lb is simply a blank form which anyone can buy and fill in.” Archbishop Corrigan then showed the reporter a long letter which he received from Leybourn, asking the Archbishop’s support for the proposed bank and offering him one thousand shares of stock. If the enterprise succeeded he had reason to know that some one might receive red stockings, “ intimating, of course, thereby,” said the Arcchbishop, “that I might be made a Cardinal, besides offering me a bribe. I took no notice of any of the fellow’s letters, and when he called ho was not admitted to the house, and orders were given to the butler never to admit him on any pretence whatever.”
