JUBILEE CELEBRATION. REGATTA AND SPORTS. Auckland, Dec. 21.
This Jubilee Celebration Committee met at the Mayor's Room, Municipal .Buildings, last evening, Mr A. E.<, Devore, president, in the chair. , , • BioyoLE-KiDiNf:.— A letter, trom, F. C>, Smith stated that hist terms for trick bicycle riding in connection with the public sports would be £15 for one day,, £20 for two days, and £31 ,10s for three days. It was resolved to adhere to the previous decision, declining,Mr Smith's offer. Horticultural Snow. — Captain Colbeck wrote declining 1 to accept ( office on the Horticultural Committee, but offered to assist otherwise. He stated that concessions in connection with the Jubilee celebration had been promised by the Northern Steamship Company, and that Mr Hudson would recommend the Railway Commissioners'to make similar concessions. Letter leceived. Raiiotonua Natives. — Mr H. Ellis wrote making furthor proposals to the Committee lor the exclusive control of the performance to be given by the Rarotonga natives at Jubilee time for £160. The matter was referred to a sub-committee. Maoki Event*. — Mr C. (\ Dacro< stated that he had seen Chief Paul, of Orakei, who had consented to obtain 40 natives from Kaipara and 160 from Mercer on condition that; they were fod during their stay in town. He also stated that Captain Farquhar had promised to bring 50 Maoris from Taurunga, the natives to pay their own faros, Swindley, of Tauranga, had also promised to bring 100 Urewera natives on condition that they were allowed £50 passage money. This matter was left in the hands of the sub-committee to make further arrangement and report. Maoki War Dance.— Mr E. W. Willcocks wrote suggesting in connection with this event that notices printed in the Maori language should be circulated amongst the various nutive tribes, giving particulars of the Maori Jubilee events. It was resolved to adopt this suggestion. Other suggestions wore made by Mr Willcocks, but those had been anticipated. Speci vij Yacht Rack. — Mr Jas. Haultain reported that he had seen Mr Bell, ageno for the Mutual Life Association, re special raco for the Association Trophy. Mr 801 l had suggested holding the contest on Jubilee Friday, that there should be two prizes, viz., £18 for first prize and £12 lor second prize (in trophies), that the entries should be received at the same time as the Regatta entries, and thao there should be open competition. It was agreed to accept Mr Bell's otter and suggestions, the matter to be left in the hands of the Regatta Committee. Regatta Fuouramjuks. —Mr Devore stated that he had received three oilers for the right to print and advertise the Jubilee Celebration programme, the oilers being 30, 50, and 55 guineas respectively. It was resolved to call for tenders for this privilege. Pkookssiox. — Mr Devoro said there had been tome talk about a procession in connection with tho Jubilee celebration. He thought the idea a good one, and suggested that the various friendly societies and volunteers should be communicated with on the subject. It was agreed to carry this idea into eiicct, also that the trade societies should be included in the request. Flagships. — With reference to this matter, it was stated that one of the Union Company's steamers would be available on Kegatta Day, and it was resolved to communicate with the manager of the Union Company on the subject. Lokd Cakiujs t «to.n. — The following telegram, received by Mr Devore, was read : •• His Excellency cannot say until arrival of Lord Carrington on 11th January. Will let you know as soon as possible afterwards. — (Signed) Kjveksdalk Waliuxnd." Rkoatta. — Kegatta Day programme was up for h'nal consideration Mr A. H. Nathan suggested the addition of a scow race, ten entries being guaranteed. Mr Nathan also stated that he had received a handsome cup from Y. Hay man and Co. for a regatta prize. — Mr C. C. Dacre reported that the Regatta Club had so far collected about £120, and Mr Devore stated that his list now totalled £438 17s.— The question of a scow race was referred to the Regatta Committee. Swimmimj. — Mr St. Clair reported that tho Swimming Club programme for Jubilee Thursday would stand. ' Anything new would be in the nature of additions. Race Meeting.— Mr Devore stated that originally there were two race meetings set down by the Takapuna Jockey Club for Jubilee week, one for January 29th, another for February Ist. At the urgent desire of the Jubilee Committee the Club agreed to drop the second day, but the Auckland Racing Club had stepped in and fixed a race meoting for the Thursday. The Jubilee Committee depended on this day for £200 from their sports, and the proposed race meeting would, uo doubt, make a loss of £100 at least. After a long discussion, in which the action of tho Auckland Racing Club was very severely commonted upon, it was resolved thafc the Jubilee programme should be carried through at all haszards, and that a protest signed by every member of the Committee ■ should be forwarded to the Auckland Racing Club expostulating with them on their proposal to run counter to the Jubilee celebration, thereby depriving, the latter of a large measure of public support.
