WELLINGTON HARBOUR BOARD. LIFE INSURANCE OF EMPLOYEES. Wellington, Dec. 20.
At a meeting of the Harbour Board yesterday the following report of She Committee was adopted with reference to lifci insurance of employees :—": — " The Committee have the honour to report that it is in their opinion desirable that the Board's employees should make provision by life in&urance, and that ior this object the Board sanction that agreements be entered into with the individual employees, by which the Board under certain conditions undertakes to pay one-halt of the premiums, provided that the amount of the policies do not exceed 1+ years' earnings ; that life insurance shall be compulsory on all men (over 21) hereafter to ioin the service, or who have joined the service since the Ist of January,- 1889, and all pilots and boatmen, and that it shall be optional on all others of the present employees ; that the minimum amount of insurance shall be £100 in the case of employees earning less than £125 per annum, but for employees earning £125 per annum and upwards the amount of policy shall be not less than even sums next larger than the amount of the annual wage (such even sums increasing £25 betweeoi £100 and £200, and ;by €50 above £200) ; that the amount be in- ! creased if necessary, on promotion, and that '? in fixing the minimum amount of the policies above £100 allowance shall be made for death beoetit of any Friendly Society to which the employee may belong ; that all new policies be taken out with the Government Life Insurance Deparbment,.and that, the premiums be paid by the Board to the department, and the amount of contribution? by the employees deducted from their tortnightly or monthly wage ; that the policies be payable on death or on attaining the age of 60,; that the policies be held by the Board to ensure that the amount shall* be available, in case of death ; that in the case of employees who are insured at present in om'cea other than the Government Life Insurance, and who may care to avail themselves of the Board's "contributions, the Board pay onehalf of the premium nob exceeding the amount that ,would> be payable under the scheme 5 that the committee , be appointed a Standing Committee, With power to make, arrangements tv carry 'out the scheme, ami to deal Svith all .matters that may ,arise in connection .therewith." , 1- 'Thoßoard sanctioned the expenditure of £6,000. in .providing additional export ao ; commodafcion. <lt is intended that thisjox.penditureishall be -made in.connectiotvwith the^wool export, and provision ,iB,,to' be made fbr« berthing two; more "ghips^t the wbbl'wharf. ■ < \ . . t :
