NEWS FROM THE EAST. GREAT FIRES IN CHINA. LOSS OF 41 LIVES.
Xj r is following items aro from files by the steamer Jumna at Sydney :—: — The French mail steamer Natal had to deck at Tanjong L'agoa, in consequence of damage received during a severe typhoon encountered in tho China Soa. The troupe of Spanish Estudiantina musicians were en route to Australia by the British barque Phaeton, recently destroyed at Cocos Island. Tho construction of railways in China has been stopped owing to the general uneasiness. The new Hansa lino steamer Mario Biunner was lost recently in the Red Sea. A fire played great havoc in the native city of Foochow on the night of November 11th. Two thousand houses were totally destroyed, and 41 lives lost. Puring the recent heavy weather the steamer Carinet ran to Haipona for shelter. The Japanese Government have contracted for the construction of an ironclad ab Ngasaki, only metal from the Tokay foundry to be used. The Emperor of China was recently rumoured to be dead. He is now much better. Humour also states that great fears are entertained of his being affected bv palty. A revolution occurred during his illnos?, though every precaution was taken to prevent such an event. Imperial decrees have been issued to the authorities for the expenditure of various large sums to relieve the distress in China owing to tho recent iloode. Two largo lires raped at Canton recently. One destioyed over 200 shops. Serious riots took place lately between rival villages near Canton. The working of the Mein-Too-Koo coal and iron mines has been semi-oiHcially sanctioned. An insurrection occurred at Amoor. The first detachment of Government troops was routed by banditfe, and the second reinforcements fared very little better, having retreated with the loss of their general. A fire recently at Messflfs Russell's silk factory did much damage. Several quarrels have occurred amongst the Chinese and Japanese firemen on board tho steamer Glanmorgan«hire at Shanghai. One Chinaman was'killed. Tho steamer Den bury left Singapore on October 25th with a general cargo and 400 Chinese pah&ongers for Hongkong and other port?, and has not since been heard of. The American ship C'hesborough is reported a total wreck, 19 of her 23 hands being di owned. ' A serious riot occurred at Man Kang Fu, an important piefoctural city on tho Va Yang Lake mission stations ot the China Inland Mission. The Methodist Chapel was destroyed. The riot was caused by the students, who were weary of waiting for tho examiners.
