ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS. RESULTS OF DUNEDIN MEETING. Dunedin, Dec. 16.
The championship athletic meeting on Saturday last was an immense success. Boine: the tireb championship meeting in the colony, it croatod a deal of interost.and the attendance of fcho public was* very large. A wind was blowing from northeast, and it was nob expected that pood times would be made ; however, some of the timc3 were excellent. Final heat : Hcmpton (Southland) 3 Keovcs ( Can tei bury) . . . 2 Schwnrt/.kall' (Sydney) . . .3 Time, 9 3-sth poc. Tho competitors inn with a strong wind. AU were together for half the distance ; lleeves then drew ahead. Hcmpton, however, came with a great nic-h, and won by at least five yards.

o\'i. Milk Walk. McKelvey (Uunedin) . . 1 Cocks (Canterbury) . 2 Findlny (Dunedin) . 3 K. C. »smith (South Canterbury) also competed. It was not a veiy spirited walk, E. .J. McKelvcy (Dunedin) being an evident winner iiom Lho «-tart, and lio won easily by 30 yards, putting on a grand spurt at the finish and coveting the distance in 7min 13oec.

The other two got oil to^ethe., and kept their position until about six hm dies were got over. In the linal jump Bafcger took the hurdle first, and won by five yards. It wad a fine race between Bather and Shaw, and a good deal of money changed hands, Shaw being heavily backed by the (Jhiistchuich people. The time wa- 16imn 1 sth see.

Tju'JK Milk Walk. Tlie only competitors wcto E. J McKc'\cy, Duucdiri ; 11. y. Cocks, Canterbury ; and A. Findlay, Dunedin. There wa' little excitement over this event until the final lap, in which McKclveyand Cocks kept in close company, but in the straight came away and won just as he pleaded, but Cocks walked very pluckily throughout. The lad Findlay, who was third, was also cheered for the pluck he displaced in walking to a finieh.
PUTTINCJ THE WEIGHT. R. J. Malcolm (Wellington) wa3 first, with a bhvovv of 34 feet 9f inches ; W. J. Moir (Canterbury) being second, with 33 feet 11 inches : \V. J. Strong (Dunedin) third, 33 feet 4 inches.
Quarter Milk Flat. This event was most exciting. Tho competitors were :— J. P. Hutchison and B. Owen, Auckland ; I*. J. Nec-s, Dunedin ; 11. M. Reeves, Christcliurch ; and J. M. King, Wellington. Half-way round Reevos and King came right away from tho others, and between thef>e two up the straight a most determined and exciting race ensued, but Reeves breasted the tape a yard in advance of King. Both were pretty well exhausted, the pair staggering all over the track as they were nearing home. Ness secured third place, but neither he nor Owen was ever in the race. Jt was won in 54 2-sth sec.
Pole Jump. For this there was only one competitor, T). M. Robeitson (Cauberbury), who jumped 9itsYm. Tiuikk-mims Fr,,vr. — The starter? were : P. Morrison, South Canterbury: ]). W ood, Cantoibury ; A. J. McCredie, Uuncdin ; .Spencer, Sydney Harrier*. In the seventh lap Spencer dropped our, and MeCiedio followed liis cxamnlo in bho neNtlap, Bpcncer had to be assisted out ot the field. Tho nice between Morrison and Wood wis a mere proco&aion, JMoiriaon winnintr by about 40 yards, in the timo of 16 2-sbh mm.
