At the Baptist Union yostorday tho following resolutions were passed :—": — " That bhi-3 Conference rejoices in tho records of the spread of total abstinence principles anil agencies, and ib hereby records its heai by sympathy with the movement and commends to tho earnest support of all our churches the temperance question ; it further tid\ U>es and roquestb the ministers to pi each an annual sermon on the subject on tho last Sunday in November ; that this assembly hereby records its emphatic protest against tho general broach of tho Sunday closing clauses of the Licensing Act- ; it als protests against tho lemoval from th jurisdiction of tho local licensing committees to the Itailway Commissioners ot tho power to license railway refreshment stalls ; and, further, it protests against tho granting of such liccntos by tho Commissioners, u hereby encouragement is oHorod for the .salo of liquor on Sunday.*."' A deputation from tho vaiious temperance bodies wailed on the Union, and presented an address, Tho President welcomed tho deputation, and read to them the lesulution wliich had boon passed. It was decided t'j hold the next meeting in Auckland The oflicors elected were the following :— President, Key. A. North; Vieo- President, Wr David Car.- on ; Troasurei, Mr John Simon ; auditor*, Messrs Bcckinsalo and Meggitb ; secretary, Rev. W. U. Woolley ; committee, Messrs Dallaston, Dick, Battlcy. Biich, Diiver. The statement of accounts bhowed receipt?, C 290 3s 3d ; expenditure, £201 18e. Mr W. Peters was appointed business manager. It was resolved to hold a week of prayer, beginning with the fir&b Sunday in May. Votes of thanks biought tlio meetings to a close.
