The adjourned annual meeting of the Te Aroha Hot Springs Domain Board was held on Saturday evening la«t. Piesent : Messrs Gavin (chairman), Ilott, Lipsey, and Ahier. Mr Lipsey apologised For his absence on the previous Tuesday evening. The minutes of the meeting held on Tuesday, December 10th (daie foi holding annual meeting for election of Chairman) wore read. Mr Ilott : It is necessary thit the minutes of the last annual meeting be read . Chairman to the Clerk : You had better read them Mr Menzie, Mr Ahier : The annual meeting lapsed last year, and a special meeting was held •fterwaids, the minutes of which were confirmed at the following monthly meeting. Chairman : Read the minufes of both thnae meetings Mr Menzie. The minutes of both the meetings referred to wero then road, C iairman : You are nware gentlemen that this adjourned me-'ting is for the purpose of electing a Chairman for the ensuing year, ami before vacating the chair I desire to tender my sincere thanks to the members of the Board for the assistance they have accorded me during my term of office. The works and improvements cairied out by the Board during tho past year have not been as great or altogether as satisfactory as we would wish, owing to lack of funds, I'lit under the ciicumstances we have done the best we could. As you are aware the Minister of Lands told us we aie not allowed to borrow money, and consequently v we have not been able to carry oat some works we would like to have done ; but we may be able during the coming year to do a liUle more. As>ain gentlemen, I thank yon for t'te support you have given me, an I now beglenve to vacate the chaiK Mr Ahier : Mr Chairman it i" not necessary for you to vacite the chair until your successor is appointed, that is how I read the Acr. Mr Ilott: It is always customaiy for the Chairman of anyjoeal body to vicate the chair on the occasion of the election of a Chnirm.iM for a new term, ntid generally the Cleric takes the chair pro, te»n. Mr Lipspy : T don't think there is any necessity for you to vacate the chair Mr Gavin, until your suoeessor is appoints I. Mr Ilott : T cm only snv it would be a moat unusual proceed n<> for Mr G.ivhi to reta : n the '-hair, nivl put the motion, rct-apjjQintjng hjinsalf, fco fhis mealing ;
mvl I should mil think Mr O.ivin would v:\re to do so. Mr G.-ivin : ll is] believe the general rule for the Chairman to vaiaie lh< i chair at an annual mpelinrr, nnd T would prefer doing 1 so. (Mi Ga\in thereupon vacated the chair), ■ • .Mr Lipj-oy moved, tlint Mr Ahier bo appointed Chairman pm. teni. The rrolioii not, being seconded for a time, Mr 1 llo t said lie w.ni'd second it, seeing it would make little real difference, but the Clerk wa3 the proper person lo tdce the chair pro. tern, . Mr . Lipsey : I believe, gentlemen, when I propose Mr Gavin as chairnan Foe the ensuing twelve months, I shall be expressing the w'sheo of every member of this Board.— (Mr I' -,tt— Hear, hear). Mr Gavin has always done his best for the Board, and canied out the duties of his office to the best of his ability. I have therefore much pleasure in proposing that Mr Gavin be elected Chairman for the next twelve months. Mr Ahier seconded the motion, which was then put and earned. Mr Gavin, in resuming the chair, re turned thanks to the members of the Board for the honour they had conferred on him in again electing him thei^ Chairman, and said he would rto his best to carry out the dut : es of his office, and the wishes of the members. Chairman : There were two matters left over for the consideration of this meeting. First with lespect to the tennis court. It was decided to leave this matter in the hands of the Clerk to asphalt two corners, one with sand, the other with sawdust, to see which was best. The Clerk stated the price of the tar was Is j.er gallon at Te Aroha, but he thought it would be cheaper by raking a quantity, and getting it in Auckland. New Bath house : Chairman : The second matter was with respect to the election of a bath house at tht» Sulphur Spring. He \va3 not in a position to give an. estimate as to the cost, as he had not had time to prepare the plans, etc, which were necessary. The Board might by means of a pump ami piping convey the water from (he Sulphur Spring into one of the bath rooms in No. 3 building ; but if til eP ßoard could afford it, he would 9Uggnst that a small building be erected at the Spring. j Mr llott : It wr.uld nof oo<sf so very much more to buil 1 ji .louble bathroom at the Sulphur Spring, buj before proposing to dv so, I wish to know Mr L'ps-'y's feelings in the matter. Amm h Wirer, bettor, and more convenient l»a»h oouM there be elected for t'.ie Native*, to be reserved solely for their u*p, an 1 by "adoptiji^rthat course, another 'bathroom would be avfolal le in No. 3 building for the public, and the natives would not b> i iconvenienced in am way, but would be morn com p ortible. C inirman : We want to cive the Natives as hot a bath a« possible, olsetl.ey do not cue about it, bnt I don't wish to do anything j n tne mattPr without consulting Mr Lipsey. The Natives would ceitainly have a bettor room, and more accommodation than they have at present, if a new bath wa<? erected for them. Mr llott: Mr Lipsey if> to n certain extent the mouthpiece of the Native* at Te Aioha, and I have no doubt the matter could be easily arranged. It would be for their benefit, and they would be more comfortable. They would certainly have a much better room then they have at present, and they could have the so'e use of it. I think the Natives shonld have every consideration shown them in tins matter. They gare the springs for public use, and the least we can do is to provide them with a good bath to be reserved entirely for their own use. The present bath kept for them is very small. Iwonldlike to see a good roomy bath and bath room erected for them under the same roof as the one for using the water from the sulphur spring ; but with separate entrance and approach, and in fact quite distinct in every way ; beyond being under the same roof. I would like Mr Lipsey to state if he thinks the Natives would object to the present arrangement being altered. It would be greatly to their advantage. Mr Lipsey : T think it would be better to lurid another bathroom for the Natives as suggested, but I don't know about giving them the solo right to it. It should be under the control of the caretakers. Mr llott : By sole right, I mean of course that the bath be set apart exclusively for the use of the Natives. Resolved on the motion of Mr Ahier, seconded by Mr llott, That the Chairman prepare plans and specifications for erecting a building over the Sulphur Spring", and that tenders be invited for the work at once. Advertising : ]Vtr Ahier gave notice that he would move, at the next ordinary or special meeting held that a sum of £10 be devoted towards advertising the baths at Dunedin during the Exhibition. Mr llott. : If it is to bo brought forward at a special meeting it will be npees«ary for yon to fix a date, Mr Ahier. Resolved that the special meeting be held on Monday,* 23rd inst. Brass Band : A letter was real from the Secret try of the Te Aroha Brass Band, asking the Bo.ird if the sum of L 7 I<K votod by the Board to the late Band, would still hofl good with the new T>-ind. M' Ilotf-. Raid he should c?rtainlv he in favour of the subsidy to the Band being continued. Tl»p Chairman and other members n'so expressed themselves favourable to the subsidy being continued, and it was re.solve.Jj on the motion of l\fr Ilottj $hat the letter be considered ;n't. 'the spoeja.) menus' to }ip bold on the 23rd inst. This wf«s fill the business.
