Ferrets.

Says a writer in the North Otago "Times": — "I am sorry to say that the ferrets, from which so much was expected, have proved a failure. Of the thousands that have been liberated on the vai-ious runs in the district only a few have survived, the winter. From information received from the overseers of poisoning gangs and others I can confidently assert on most runs the ferrets are almost extinct. One runholder who turned out several hundreds says that he believes jppsb of them died within a fortnight, and another tells me that he has seen only five feiTets this season, and these were dead ones. On one run, by way of experiment, 120 ferrets were liberated on an island where rabbits were numerous, and after being there for a few weeks it became evident that the ferrets preferred to die of starvation or eat one another than take the trouble to kill the rabbits, which were not in the least reduced or disconcerted by the presence of their natural enemy."

Youth is the time of hope. When a man gets a "little older be stops hoping, and begins reaching out for whatever he can get.
