Shearing by Steam.

There are a large number of Wolseley's machines now in full swing at Mangabaratara, Hawke's Bay, and the men are rapidly coming to appreciate them as a vast improvement on the old laborious process. The shearing shed at Milbourne station is also fitted up with these machines, and I understand that as a consequence only white labour is now employed, as the native intelligence is not sufficiently cultivated to shear by steam. An improvement is badly wanted in the gut band which connects the shears with the driving pulley, as much time is ab present lost by continual breakages. However, perfection will undoubtedly come with time. — Our Hmoke's Bay Correspondent.
