London, October 22. Mr Gladstone, speaking at Southport* said that Turkish misgovernment in Crete was a formidable source of danger to the peace of Europe. Alluding to the Irish question, he contended that coercion in that country was directed against a peaceful and necessary system of combination. The first of the ten prisoners now on trial for the murder of Inspector Martin, at Gweedore, has been convicted of manslaughter.

October 23. An important iron and steel company in the North of England is willing to establish works in Australia and purchase properties necessary for carrying on their business immediately if the colonial Governments will guarantee their custom for a term of years. Mr Moorhouse is their agent. The delay in furnishing a balance-sheet of the strike funda is excused on the ground , that money has been required to relieve the families of men convicted of intimidation, but owing to the strictures in the " St. James Gazette " on the confused state of the finances, the Committee promise that the accounts ahall be published after November 4th. The " Pall Mall Gazette" states that the families of strikers who were sentenced to terms of imprisonment for intimidation tire receiving from 10s to £1 per week. The balance in hand is slightly under £6,000.

October 24. Tenders for the New Zealand conversion loan were opened to-day. The total amount tendered was ,£4,900,000. i'enderers at 8s 6d get 21 pel celt, of the loan, and allotments to tenderers above that price are made in full. The loan is now quoted at a premium ol one-half.

Ddijun, October 24. The Irish Parliamentary party met in this city to day, and established the Tenants' Defence Association, an outline of the objects of which was given in a recent cable message.

Chicago, October 24. The trial of the persons who are charged with complicity in the murder of Dr. Cronin was commenced in this city to-day. The State Prosecutor (Mr Longneckcr) declared in his opening address to the jury that Alexander Sullivan, Reilly, and Bolland, three of the prisoners composing a triangle of the Clan-na-Gael, had betrayed men who were sent on dynamite missions to England in order that they might steal the funds of the Society. It was the intention of Dr. Cronin to expose the facts connected with the disappearance of a quarter of a million dollars of the Society's funds, and knowing this the prisoners had caused his death.

Melbodknj;, October 23. A shocking occurrence took place at Malvern last night, during the progress of a torchlight procession through the town. A fireman named Cox \va& carrying 1 a compound for making coloured tires, when his clothos caught file, and the substance igniced and burned fiercely. Attempts were made to save him, but he died a terrible death.
