TIRAILLEURS TRIUMPHS.

The Spring Meeting of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club this week brought to light a brilliant three-year-old in Mr S. H. Gollans Tirailleur. Both the Guineas and Spring Handicap were gifts to him, and in each he appears to have finished at the right end. The two easy triumphs of the colt have naturally caused him to be sought after by speculators for the New Zealand Cup from one end of the colony to the other, and his chance of annexing the event bears an exceedingly rosy aspect. He is handicapped at 6st sib, but his Spring Handicap win entails him a 31b penalty, which increases his weight to 6st 81 b. This should not stop him. The colt's name is missing

from the C.J.C. Derby entries, but he is entered for the Canterbury Cup, w.f.a., Dunedin Exhibition Cup, Auckland Guineas, Great Northern Derby, and Auckland Cup, so he has plenty of valuable engagements before him. Last season Tirailleur started on three occasions. At the Hawke's Bay December he ran unplaced in the Two-year-old'Hate, 8.5, won by Iphigenia, 8.0, with Strephon, 8.5, second and Eileen, B.s, third. At Napier Park January he got second in the Two-year-old Handicap, 7.3, won by Strephon, 8.7, beating Eileen, 7. 12,and two others, and at the Hawke's Bay March he ran unplaced in the Nursery Plate, won by Cynisca, with Strephon second and Eileen third. Mr Gollan purchased Tirailleur at the Sylvia Park sale of yearlings in 1888 for 110 guineas, and there is every probability of his adding fresh laurels to the great breeding establishment from whence he hails. His extended pedigree reads :—: —

Students of pedigree will thus perceive from a perusal of the above that Tirailleur's dam Florence Macarthy has somo of the choicest and most successful running blooJ in the world in her veins. Macaroni, her sire, won the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby ot 1863, and is sire of Camellia (winner of the One Thousand Guineas, 1876), Spinaway (winner of the One Thousand Guineas and the Oaks, 1875), sold at Lord Falmouth's sale as a brood mare for 5.500 guineas ; of Mavis (dam of Galliard) sold at the same time, for 3.000 guineas ; of Macgregor (winner of the Two Thousand Guineas, 1870) and of Bonnie Jean and Etarre, the first and third in the Oaks, ISB3. Lady Morgan, dam of Florence Macarthy, is also dam ot Kuperra, who ran second to Rayon dOr for the Sfc Leger of 1879, and won the July Stakes. Lady Morgan is by the Derby winner, Thormanby, out of Morgan La Faye, who was dam of Marie Stuart, winner of The Oaks and St. Leger of 1873. Tirailleur is the first of Florence Macarthy's progeny to race, the others having met with accidents, but one of her daughters Athole claims as her son Mr D. O'Brien's colt Dunkeld.
