FOUNDING AN EMPIRE.

H. May. Ponsonby.

[Lines suggested by reading in Auckland Stab the account of the despatch of a number of vessels from England fifty years ago to these shores to found an Empire.]

We sing the fame of those who came With full determination, To lay out in this far-off land A splendid Southern nation. They laboured hard from noon till eve, To grasp the situation, Because, you know, they were resolved, To raise a Southern nation. And then a code of laws were formed, That neec^g some alteration To make New Zealand what we want— A glorious Southern nation. 'Tis true we have some dirty spots, That need a fumigation. But that is always sure to be In building up a nation. New Zealand is our happy home, And we in contemplation. Are quite resolved to do our best To make a peaceful nation. And hope that when we're better known There'll be a gravitation Of some with brains, and money too, To form a solid nation. We're bound to prosper if there's laid A really good foundation, And this will be in years to come The far-famed Southern nation. Our climate's all that we can need. Which is a consolation. And we will pray that Heaven may bless This new-formed Southern nation.
