AT LAST.

" Near after distant ; Gleam after gloom ; Love after loneliness ; Life after tomb: After long agony Rapture of bliss ! Right was the pathwayLeading to this!" P. R. Havebgal.

I love thee ! But I would not dare To idly write of this ; For why should I a truth declare That speaks of fruitless bliss? My heart is proud and resolute ; I feel I could not brook Aught of reserve, avowed or mute, In action, word or look. I've fondly marked the witching smile That haunts thy lovely face ; And though ensnared by beauty's wile And intellectual grace, I dread to think that love in sooth Could e'er be spurned by thee. Though pure as once in early youth Its rosy dream can be. Oh ! I have listened to thy voice In strains of classic song — Strains that have made my heart rejoice As o'er the lyre 1 >ng My fancies roved in tuneful flow From pure, impassioned love, But so concealed that none may know To censure or approve. Perchance some day thr gentle heart Will be convinced of this; But until then I stand apart In isolated bliss. Eor, ah ! in thee and only thee I feel love's sacred power. That ever must abide with me Until life's latest hour. A. W. HURRY, Newton, September Bth, 1889.
