THE GREAT CAILIPH.
W. R. Wills. Otahuhu, N.Z.
The Cailiph of Medina oft delischted To roam the busy street, And thus to mark the signs of peace ana comfort In those he chanced to meet. But when he wandered in the early morning, Or nigh the noon of day, The little children, as with fear and trembling. From him would flee away. Then called he to him sage and bard and prophet: " O friends, your answer free— Why do the children with such fear and sobbing Run evermore from me ?" •* Their mothers teach them "—thus they make him answer— " That sin *hy laws condemn ; That thou art coming, and with dirs vengeance Tnou'lt deal out death to them ! "Thus thy name affrights them ; yea in their cradle, Or should they crossly weep ? 'Hark!' say the mothers; 'Lo! the dreadful Cailiph Cometh with vengeance deep ! "O, shame! Ye do me wrong," the Cailiph answered. "Tender and full of love Let me be counted by the little children; Yea, l tender as the dove.' " The little children I would have as playmates. Roaming the busy street: Their hearts are warm. Yea, will I bleas the children, Kissing them when we meet." O friends t our King, the Cailiph, is our Father, Gracious with love is He : By His holy splendour I will swear that anger Mars not His deity. Though evil men may picture the Eternal With vengeance in His eye ; O friends ! be pitiful to these frail mortals Who speak of God and lie. For God no man hath seen, nor shall till mercy Opens her gracious gate ; O, Allah ! Be Thou tender to Thy children Whose hearts are desolate. Be Thou our Cailiph and rebuke our teachers, Whose hearts are full of guile,; Thou art the Beautiful, the Just, the Tender— The Everlasting Smile.
