AN AUSTRALIAN IN ENGLAND.
A well-known owner of horses who is at present in England sends "Trumpator" the following items :—": — " I have been to Ascot, and paw the Gold Cup won. They gave away £26,000 in four days, and well they might, looking at the charges for admission to the various portions of the course and stand. As a display of wealth the whole thing was immense, but from a racing point of view it was a very long way behind either Caulfield, Rand wick, or Flemington. Trayles, the winner of the Ascot Cup, is a big, raking chesnut in Captain Alitchell's stable. We would have him over hurdles at once. A fortnight ago at Manchester he started favourite for the Cup, but was never in it. Here he won bobh the Cup and Alexandra Plate. Donovan again won in a canter. He is a biggish, leggy bay, uifch a mean forehand, ewe neck, and a coarse, shaggy mane that seems beyond control. His eye i& good, and he is made the right way behind tho saddle everywhere. His action when" extended is just perfect. Donovan's winnings are, ot courso, phenomenal, and it is pretty well certain, bar accidents, he will win the Leger (6"to 4 on now) and other rich prizes. Savill took £1,200 to £200 about Ringmaster tor the Ascot Stakes, but he died away at a mile and a quarter > and will never win over two .miles with Sst 111b, on him in anything like fair company.- Joe Thompson is apparently doing a big b'ysinessV* He stands alongside Fry (the Leviathan al waves) and it is a matter of fighting almost to get near him. Ib -is a great pity White is not sending* someone home to train his horsos. lam confident a fair hors-e trained in our way will beat a much better one handled English fashion. They laugh at the time trials and the watch generally, and usually send five or six out of the stable and back the fastest in his next race if the weights are about right."
