A GOOD WORD FOR THE TOTALISATOR.
Mr Willi.-im Day, Uio eminent English trainer, has tfiven tho " Fortnightly Heview " his views on " Turf Reform." Here is one extract I commend to the attention of the opponents of the totalisator. " The Paris Mutual, or some scheme like it," says the authoiity, "appears to mo our only vefugo from one of the worst evils of racing. It has proved so beneficial elsewhere that I do not sec how it could fail ot like effect here; and it would biing about due obser\anceof the law? against gambling — habitual infraction of which is one of the most obvious and obnoxious features of every race meeting. What we can do, and what we muft do, tome day or other, is to protect the backer fjorn being fleeced, as well as to divert his Josses to the use and benefit of the tuif itself, instead of to the maintenance ot a clas< ot individuals who do not contribute in am way to its support, and too many of whom can onty be described, mildly, as unscrupulous plunderers ct the ignorant and weak minded. Risk of mischance? would be avoided entirely, since the backer can draw his winnings immediately after the raco is over, and on the spot. Surely this, amonjj so many other advantages already enumerated, cannot be regarded as unimportant, and invests this mode of wagering with an impartial fairness that can be claimed for no other method of betting."
