TWO-YEAR-OLD RACING IN AMERICA.
Sir Modred's two-year-old son Ballarat, who distinguished himself in the land of the Btar« and stripes recently, suffered a defeat in the Great American Stakes of ,£4,000, for two-year-olds, 5 furlongs, run at> Brooklyn. This was at the hands of St. Carlo, .sired' by St. Blaise, the Epsom Derby winner. Ballarat started favourite at 210 1. Referring to tho win, the New York "Spirit of the Times" says: — "Mr Belmont's English stallion, St. Blaise, has scored an American success at the very outset. A fortnight since the get of the Epsom Derby winner of 1883 was untried, to-day the world rings with their renown. They have takeu the field at Brooklyn and routed all comers, whether it be the Kayon dOre of France,
the St. Moclreds of New Zealand, or our own Luke Bhckburns, Hindoos, and Glenelgs, they have gone down steadily before the ' maroon and red ' of the young scions ot St. Blaibe. It is a curious fact thai nearly all tho two-year-old stakes at the Brooklyn meeting have fallon to St. Blaise colts. St. James won the Seaside, St. Carlo the Groat American, Padishah the Bedford. Already the young son of Hermit has quite a leading place among the winning sires of the year, and should he contiuue as he has begun at Brooklyn, winning the Juvenile, Sapling, .Junior Champion, Futuiity, Nursery, Titan, Eclipse, etc., he wi.l come near leading the sires at tho end of his first season — a feat unparalleled in breeding annals." St. Carlo's dam, Carina, is by Kingfisher (son of Lexington and Kingston's daughtor Blthain Laps), out of Carita, by The 11lUsed {imp, son of Bredalbane and Ellerniire) out of Camilla, by King Tom -Agnes, by Pantaloon — Black Agnes. St. Carlo ' traces back on his dam's side to the same family that gavo Ormonde to the English Turf/
