BITS OF TURF.
The Hon. J. White's Derby colts have arrived safely in England. ! Cissy (Trenton's full sister) is looking better than anything at Ellerslie. It transpires that Cupid (Pasha's halfbrother), who was tecenfcly shipped to Sydney, was purchased by Mr H. Oxenham. The much-talked-of Lorraine is standing his New Zealand Cup preparation at Riccarton, and British Lion, Dudu, Cynioca, and Chudleigh are regular attendants on the tiack. At the annual meeting ot tho Wanganui Jockey Club, one of the membeis suggested they should have a, €1,000 Cup next season on the strength of their first credit balance. Better <*ense, however, prevailed, the proposal being pooh-poohed. Mr Stevens, of Wanganui, intends caking another .shipment of horses to India, and expects to leave about the beginning of next month. Mr Sam Powell hae not yet made up his mind whether to stand or race Escutcheon. It is said he is likely to let the horse cover a few mares early, and race him later on in the season. There is a rumour abioad on the other side that Australia will shortly attempt to appropriate the Liverpool Grand National. The horses are not mentioned, but Mr W. S. Cox, the rider of the winner ot the V.X.C. Grand National Hurdle Race, will probably accompany the team. Donovan's victory in the Epsom Derby brought the Duke of Portland's winnings on the tuif in stakes between May, 1881, and June, 1889, up to £100,134 4«. Since then Ayrshire, Donovan and Semolina have added at least £15,000 to this total. The following is from the pen of the sporting writer in "Tiuth "' :—": — " Mr James White, of Melbourne, has entered two animate, bred by him in Australia, for next year's Classic Stakes — a colt by Chester out of Princess Maude, and a colt by Chester out of La Pnnces3. I undei stand that these creature.^ arc to be despatched to England in June by the Orient steamer Orizaba.'*' What if one of theso creatures should win the Engli&h Derby?
