Thames, August 2. Saxon. — Communication has not yofc been effected between the winze from No. 4 level and the drive at No. 5 level. May Queex. — Very fair headway is being made by the contractor with the erection of this Company's winding engine over the site of the old City of York shaft. The iron poppet heads have been placed in position, and the machinery connected with the winding engine is all in the building erected for its reception. The contractors were today engaged in laying down the bed logs, and in the course of about a fortnight everything should be in readiness for commencing ■winding operations. Lone Haxd. — An additional soz Bdwt gold has been banked by the mine manager, thus making the total return from the 43 loads of quartz the excellent one of 960z Bdwt gold. Cambria. — The reef in the rise has been broken down. There was a good show of mineral, but no gold was seen. Lone Hand. — Cleaning up and retorting has taken place for the returns of 930z lOdwt melted gold from 45 loads quartz. Royal Oak (Coromandel). — Since last reporb, driving towards the Tokatea boundary has been discontinued owing to the reef running almost parallel with the tribute which junctions in the Tokatea mine. I have started to drive south from the rise on No. 2 cross lead, to get under where the tributers had two runs of gold in their workings overhead ; also on the junction of the Poverty gold was got going down, but was prevented from sinking owing to the quantity of water. There is nothing new to report from the tribute. The water is still up in the winze.
Thames, August 3. Ivlise Manager's Certificates. — For some time past Mr Fraser, M.H.R., has been in communication with the Government in reference to mine managers' certificates, as in the near future, according 1 to the Mining Act of 1886, some of those now in charge of mines could not longer hold their positions, not beiner In possession of certificates. The following wire was to-day read from Fraser regarding the matter : — " After repeated interviews with Mr Richardson and Mr Gordon, I got them to extend the time to the Ist August, 1890. In the meantime the examination papers will be revised, so that any really practical miner will be able to pass. — W. ifraser." Lone Haxd. — Treatment of 43 loads quartz was finished at Bull's battery late yesterday for the really excellent return of 91oz retorted gold, or over 2oz 2dwt to the load. This yield is the result of a month's operations, and is the best that has yet been obtained from the mine since it was taken over by the Company, and affords, ample evidence of the richness of the block now being operated upon in the upper level. Kuatuna District. — The trial crushing of 20 tons quartz from the Carbine claim has produced 21oz 18dwt melted gold, while 20 tons from the Black Jack claim yielded 19oz of gold. Tbentok. — This morning the mine manager wired :—": — " A good deal of water spouting out from face of bottom level."
Thames, August 5. Saxon. — In the winze there has been considerable trouble with the water, and the work has been dela>ed in consequence. The stopes on hangingwall reef above No. 4 level are looking well, and also the reef in the stopes above No. 2 level near the junction. The quartz going through the battery has been something like that of the previous week. New Prince Imperial — Henderson and party have crushed one load of general dirt for 16dwt melted gold. They have given up their holding. Dunn and party have crushed two load 3 general dirt and 101b picked stone for 7oz Bdwt melted gold. New Moanataiari. — The band of mineralised stone in the lead of the winze is getting stronger, and hopes are entertained that from this upwards the lead will be payable. Between 30 and 40 loads of quartz are now on hand for crushing. As yet very little gold has been seen in the sinking of the winze. There is no material change in the Reuben Parr reef. On Friday a leader 3or 4 inches thick came in from the hangingwall, but has nob yet junctioned with the main lode. Saxon. — Late on Saturday afternoon the winze sunk from No. 4 level holed through to the drive at No. 5 level. The manager intends to drive about five feet to pick up the reef, as he will then get it a short distance from the break. New Alburnia. — The crushing of 42 loads of quartz will be finished either this afternoon or to-morrow.
