MINING NEWS. UP PER TAKARU DISTRCT. A NEW DISCOVERY. Thames, July 20.
RisroKTS have been current in town for the past few days that a " find " of importance had been made by PJummoi* Broa., the well-known prospectors, in the Upper Tavaru district. In order, therefore, to obtain reliable information respecting the discovery, X visited the locality on Saturday wibh two or three other gentlemen who take an interest in mmmg 1 . Thereof has been exposed Lo \ iew on the side of a very steep hill about 500 ft in height, and at a point some 400ffc below the summit. The surrounding country is an excellent description of sandstone, being all that cduld be dcsiied for the existence of auriferous lodes, while the Prospectors' reef, where exposed, is from 2 to 3 feet in thickness. It is composed of quartz of the most kindly nature, somewhat brownish in colour, but it is a nice strong body of stone, and it is) undoubtedly a compact lode, and not one of thos-e "blows'* so frequently met wibh on the surface, but which do nob carry downwards. Up to the present of couiae very little work has been done upon lb, a& the reef has merely been oxpo&ed, but there ire several strong blotches of gold visible in the solid atone, and in the pieces broken out the precious metal is lreely discernible through the quartz ; it is not confined to mere flakes on the surface of the stone. Taken altogether the prospects are most encouraging, and Mes&rs Plummer Bros, have such faith in the permanency oi the " find," and that the reef wili carry downwards, that they have already made preparations for putting in a lower level, which will give them about 40 feet more of backs from where the lode has been broken into, and was first discovered. Close to this, but at a point nearer the "camp," Meesra Lowiie Bros, are also carrying on operations on a leader varying in thickness from one to two inches, and in which dabs and colours of gold are plainly discernible.
