STREET AFFRAY. STRUGGLE WITH A BURGLAR. A POLICEMAN SHOT. Sydney, June 3.
A desperate affi ay took place in Mac-leay-stieet at an early hour this morning between a police constable and a burglar, during which the former was shot. It appears that about thiee o'clock this morning Constable Sutherland, a native of New Zealand, vsho was on duty in Macleay-street, saw a buiglar making off from a house which he had successfully entered. The policeman proceeded to arrest the man, and a sevete stiuggle took place. At last the burglar, whose name is Morrison, seeing that he was being worsted, drew a revolver and shot Constable Sutherland in the groin. The wound caused the latter to let go his man, but before doing so he struck the burglar a terrific blow on the head with his baton, Morrison then made off, but was captured later in the day. Constable Sutherland died about three hours after being shot. The mother and sister of the murdered Constable Sutherland reside in New Zealand.
