MINING NEWS.
Thames, June 4. Nymph and Mermaid (Upper Tararu).---A parcel of 251b of fair picked sfcone was brought into town on Saturday. Mr Roberts, one of the proprietors, informs me that it was obtained from two reefs on the surface. The winze on the leader has , attained u depth of 30ft, and colours of gold are still seen in the quartz. New Albuknia. — The Sons of Freedom reef looks well, and good colours of gold are seen every time it is broken down. Saxon. — There is no change to report either from No. 5 level or the various stopes. Big Pump. — The annual inspection of the Big Pump boileis will bake place in about a fortnight's time, which will necessitate the suspension of pumping operations for about a week. New Prince Imperial. — Mr D. G. MacDonnell, legal manager of the New Prince Imperial G.M. Co., received the following report this morning :— The last stope up to the level on Dunns leader is in over twenty feet. \Ve have seen a little gold through the stone when breaking down the lead. As soon as I finish this block, I will have the dirt put through the battery, and will then try the same lead westward of the crosscut on No. 1 level, Connor and party have finished crushing four loads of general dirt and nine pounds of picked stone for 13oz 16dwt melted gold. New Moanataiaki G.M. Company.— The manager, under date June Ist, reports that they have been engaged in extending the drive through to the hangingwall ot the lead. A. start has been made to drive westward. There will be about 200 feet to be driven before the boundary of the Waiotahi is reached, and consequently they must pass through some good country, and he is very hopeful of the results. At the intermediate level (Cambria section) the drive is still being carried on. A break which appears to be identical with that which made the gold in the Cambria crossed the face that day. The new Peiton wheel has been placed in position, and crushing will be resumed on Monday. Royal Oak. — During the past week there have been colours of gold showing in the reef as driven on The ground continues favourable for gold, but there has come a split in the reef going up. At the floor of the drive the reef is move solid and continues to show gold going ahead, also showing a large croso ran of mineral ground from the footwall which has the appearance of No. 3 cross lead, which has been but little wrought on. The tributers are still working on the cross reef on No. 2 at different levels, and not getting anything,' although the reef and indications are favourable. — Peter Reid. Caledonian. — The minemanager reports: all hands are now engaged at the intermediate level, and the prospects are very encouraging. The reef is a fine body of stone about 2 feet thick, carrying excellent mineral and showing occasional good colours of gold. About 30 feet in from the rise a cross leader was met with but nothing done on it until the main drive was ahead ; it has now been opened up and proves to be about one foot thick in the best of country, carries mineral indications, equal if not superior to the main body, shows a little gold and appears to be getting bigger as driven on. Saxon. — The works in progress at new or No. 5 level are two drives on No. 1 main reef, No. 1 and 2 stopes, and the drive along the course of the No. 2 reef (at same level). The drive going east on No. 1 main reel has now been extended a distance of 96 feet. From crosscut, the reef averages about two feet in thickness, carrying j fair minerals, and a little gold is still being seen in a small vein on the hangingwall side. The No. 2 stope lias been carried 15 feet west of crosscut. The reef in this is much smaller than it was in the drive. About 101b of picked sfcone were saved from this during the week. Ten pounds of picked stone were also saved from No, 2 reef. The reef in the drive averages about 8 inche=, but little gold has been seen during the week. In the stopes the leader is larger, with occasional gold. A winze has been started on the hanging- wall, and is now down 5 feet ; the reef is fully 18 inches In thickness, with good minerals and showing a little gold on the hangingwall. The stopes are Nos. 8, 9, and 10. The reef in these averages about 15 inches. Very little gold has been seen in these stopes for the past week. The intermediate drive below No. 3 level eastward is in a distance of 33 feet. When breaking down colours of gold are freely seen.
