LAND DISTRIBUTION IN FRANCE.
In France, with a population of about 37.000,000, and a total aiea of 153,600,000 acre*!, there aio 124,935,529 acres of land under faun cultivation. The numbov of faring is 5,G72,000 5 and their average size 33. 17 acres. Of holdings under three acres in extent there are no less than 2,167,667. The number of farms ranging from 3 to 10 acres, 1,865,878; 10 to 20 acres, 769,152; 50 to 100 acres, 727,222 ; while of farms over 100 acres in size, there are only 142,088. These figures show not only how large a proportion of the soil of France is utilized for cultural purposes, but also how evenly the land is distributed amongst the population as compared with such countries as Great Britain, America, and these Australian colonies. In the United States, with a population of over iifty millions, and a land area of 1,936,940,560 acres, the total number of separate farms is only 4,008,907, or 1,663,093 farms less than there are in France, with a far smaller population, and infinitely smaller area of land. The average size of Ameiican farms is 134 acics.
