WAIORONGOMAI. (From Our Own Correspondent.)

Waiorongomai, Thursday. Mr Jamkison, the Te Arolia Silver and Gold Mining Company's, managing director, arrived here last night from Melbourne on a vibit of inspection to the Company's works. To -day in company with Mr Howell the Supcrindendcnt, he Ijas hocn busy making a. thorough examination of the whole plant. On account of the scarcity of wnter for motive power Mr howell found it necessary to reduce the staff on Tuesday last, but I have no donht many of the men knocked off will be again shortly re-in-Stuted, In, consequence of the good fall

of rain we hail Ja-fc nighf., 20 head of stampers were set going, and both revolving furnaces were started this morning. It is to be hoped all the, delays in connection with the working of the plant will soon be at an end, as the time of year justifies us in anticipating that operations will now be carried on without any further interruption through lack of water. The laying of the water pipes in both gullies is finished : jill that requires to be done now is to make the necessary connections und overflows, &c. Mr Jaine.s McCosh Clark, t^ielopal director, arrived here from Auckland this evening. Wniorongomai -Pchool Committee : The usual monthly, and, I may say the last meeting of the present Committee, took place in the Rchool-room last evening ; all were present with the exception of one member. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The head teachers report showed the average attend-, ance for the month as 70.4 ; the number on the roll, 100. The attendance was better than last m>nth. Miss E. Nixon, assistant teacher, wrote asking permission to be absent one day, viz., April 18th. Granted. Accounts to the amount of £1 16s 8d were passed for payment. Narrow Escape : Yesterday about noon the lower portion of Mr Howland'a chimney, which was built of wood, was observed to "be on fire. A few of the ueighbours immediately rushed over and extinguished the flames, which otherwise might have resulted in a serious fire. Mr Rowland u^es a stove, and it is supposed that a few of the embers had fallen behind and ignited the wood work. Football : A special meeting of the Waiorongomai . Footballers wfts held on Tuesday evening last, at the Waiorongomai Hotel. The business of the meeting was in connection with an advertisement which appears in theTu AuoiiAand Ohinemuri News, announcing that a concert and dance will be held on behalf of the funds of the Waiorongomoi and Te Aroha United Football Clubs. The Waiorongomai Club knowing nothing of the affair it was resolved that the Secretary write for an explanation of the matter.
