NATIVE MEETING. EXTINCTION OF HAUHAUISM. Taupo, March 20.
A large gathering of all the Tawharetoa tribes is taking place at the old -meeting ground, Ohaki, about thirty miles from Tapuaeharuru, on the old Galatea Beach, the object of the gathering 1 being to elect; Tarete To Heuheu head chief of all the , tribes, as successor to his father, their late chief, Te Heuheu Tukino. King Tawhiao, with 150 followers, ha? arrived •at Oronui, 8 miles from here, en route for the meeting ground. Amongst other things to be discussed by the Tawhareoas is the extinction of Hauhauism and with one chief to have one religion. A great number of the natives in this district are followers of Te Kooti, and the royal natives consider that now is a favourable opportunity to destroy for ever the influence of Te Kooti and his religion.
Cases of typhoid fever, to the number of 1,725, have been reported to the Victorian Central Board of Health this year up to March 6, as against 653 during the same period of last year. The average deathrate this year is something under 10 per cent.
