GERMAN ANNEXATION. ANOTHER ISLAND IN THE PACIFIC OCCUPIED.
On February 2nd the schooner Dashing Wave, Captain Wm. Chipman, arrived ab San Francisco, 39 days oub from Jaluit, Marshall Islands. Captain Chipman expiessed himself as not pleased with German rule in the South Pacific. There is no one to oppose the aggressive demands of Bismarck, and all the territory in that part of the world is being rapidly brought under German influence. Pleasant Island, lying about ldeg. south of the Equator, 168deg. east, has been seized by Germany. Every rocky point and every reef bearing a cocoanut tree is an object of interest to Germany, and soon becomes involved in some scheme which results in its seizure. Matters in the Marshall Group are quiet, as there is no opportunity for them to be otherwise, the authority of Germany being supreme. Commerce is hampered by excessive charges and useless restrictness. On entering the harbour, Captain Chipman states that no pilot came aboard till his vessel was anchored ; yet on leaving he was presented with a bill for pilotage amounting to $19. "Gorman emissaries in the South Pacific are saucy," said the captain; "their eyes are open to every chance to seize some additional territory, and this is rendered more easy for them, as they have no opposition."
