POETRY . COOPER'S BEACH, MANGO NUI.

Thou Sunny North ! What treasures still Itcmam unknown thy sens between? Where ferny dell and treo-clad hill Display their varied tints of green. Among those vales I fain would stray. Pleased with the glowing charms of each, And I would watch the wavelets play Upon the san s of Cooper's Beach. Again I climb my favourite height, Where roamed the Maori braves of yore, And with a lover's keen delight I watch the billows lave the shore. Where chieftains of a darker day Led forth their warriors fro,m the pa, ] scan the isles beyond the bay, And distant Maungataniwha. And as the waters gently heave, And woo again the sunlit strand, And yonder merry roamers leave Their liny footprints on the sand— I dream again of other da* s. When o'er my native hills I roved ; And by Cornubia s sunny bays Drank in the music that I loved. Where yon pohutukawas waved Their clustering blossoms, scarlet-dyed, We sat, aa children — proudly braved. The dangers of the rising tide. The merry tone 3 of childhood then Rang out o'er ocean s glorious lay, And each fair scene within our ken Seemed beautiful that Christmas Day. The noble stretch of sand that ends Where jutting rocks the waves defy ; This lofty headland that def< nds The homes which round the harbour lie. The sheltering trees that lino the shore, The glow thai, steals o'er land and sea, O'er rock and wave, will evermore Endear these pleasant scenes to me. Those wastes arc not so rich and fair As yon Oruru's fertile vale, Yet fruitful trees shall flourish there. And flow'rs their rich iicrfume exhale Methinks I see the homes which then Shall proudly rise above the bay, The dwellings of our children when Their fathers shall have passed away. Where Britain's warships safely rest, Upon our Auckland's nobio stream, And where upon the mountain's crest The poet weaves his brightest dream. I prize the charm each scene commands, Each Eden now within my reach, And yet I miss the glistening sands, The frowning rocks of Cooper's Beach. Auckland. E. S. Husband.
