THAMES.
[From our own Correspondent.] Th4MES, Monday. The election of seven members of the Thames Drainage Board for the ensuing year took place on Saturday, with the result that the following were returned : Messrs J. M, Lennox, 31 j W. S. Wilson, 31 ; R. Comer, 31 ; R. Spratt, 30 ; S. Turtle, 25 ; T. Morrin, 24 ; and Jas. Frater, 14. The unsuccessful candidates were : F. A. White, 12 ; and J J. Macky, 3. Mpssrs McGowan ami Brodie were re-elected by the Borough and County Council's respectively. Tho local Burns' Club have decided to commemorate the anniversary of the poet Burns' birthday on Friday next by a social gathering in St George's Hall. The various " knights of the cleaver" here' are to have quite a gala clay on the 4th prox., being the date of the annual picnic. They havo chartered both the s.s, Rotomahana and i».s Enterprise to proceed to Glencoe, near the mouth of the Wairoa river. Mr W. F. Porter, jun., met with a nasty accident at Miranda on Friday last. He was thrown from his horse, and badly cut about the head, whilst he also sprained his wrist, The sufferer was brought over to the Thames Hospital, where his wounds were dressed. The whare of a man named George Buchanan, at Pnnga Flat, has been entered and 80lbs of gum stolen, together with a quantity of provisians. Half of the gum has since been found " planted," but the thief has not yet been discovered. His Excellency the Governor has reappointed the RevS. Neil, and Messrs F. C. Dean and R. T. Douglas as Governors of the Thames High School. There seems every likelihood of Lockwoods process of gold extraction receiving a thorough trial at an early date. Mr Chappel, representative of a Sydney syndicate who have taken the matter in hand, has been endeavouring to purchase the old Tookey battery and site from Mr Comer, by whom it was recent!/ acquired, and although the bargain has not yet been concluded, it is probable that it will be in the course of the next few days. It is understood that the same syndicate have taken over two mining properties, one at Waihi and the other at Karangahake. Mr J. F. Heighway leaves here for Sydney ta-morrow. He will probably be j accompanied by Mr Chappel. I A sitting of the Warden's Court will be held on Thursday, when several more licensed holdings will probably be forfeited for non working.
