WAIORONGOMAI. [From our own Correspondent.] Waiorongomai, Friday.
Work in connection with the Te Avoha S. and G. M. Oo.'s ne.r plant is being steadily proceeded with ; and at the close of each week a great alteratiog is noticeable, and it is pretty evident, should no unforseen occurrence arise to delay progress, another month or two should see the whole plant ready for work. At the old tailings plant the principals of the roof over the smelter were placed in position this week, and weatherboarding has been commenced. The alterations to the matting furnace are now completed, and the flooring around it is being laid with loose brick, upon which a thin coating of groat will be poured for consolidation. The pipes for supplying water to the concentrators are being placed in position, and with the exception of the concentration boxes — of which there are about a dozen now ready —little more requires to be done to complete this portion of the plant. I refer of course to the fourteen concentrators now in position in the old battery building, to be used in connection with the original I 40 head of stampers, lam given to understand that the battery will start work after the first rain, with forty head. The interior of the revolving furnace cylinder was completed yesterday, by running a mixture of fireclay and salt in the interstices of the fire bricks. The construction of the tramway hopper, from which quartz will be fed to the new twenty head stampers, is being pushed rapidly ahead under the superintendence of Mr John Somerville, the joists are in position, and the lower portion of the floor laid. The connec- j tion between the upper portion of this hopper, and the tramway will be completed about the end of the week. Great inconvenience has for sometime past been experienced at Waiorongomai, in consequence of no alteration being made in the time for closing the morning mails, to suit the time of departure from Te Aroha. The mail closes at Waiorongomai at 7a.m. each morning, whereas on the off train day's, viz., Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, the coach leaves Te Aroha at 7 a.m. in order to catch the train to Auckland at Morrinsville. The consequence is that a letter posted at Waiorongomai on Monday after 7 a.m.; or on Tuesday, will not reach Auckland till Wednesday evening and will not be delivered till Thursday, and a similar delay in delivery occurs on the other off train days. Some of the local residents have drawn up a p:tition to the district postmaster general on the subject, which has been very numerously signed, and was despatched to the district postmaster on Wednesday last. We the undersigned residents and business people of Waiorongomai, do hereby respectfully beg to point our, the serious delay in despatching our correspondence to Auckland and Waikato, on Tuesdays. Thursdays, and Saturdays, the mails remaining at Te Aroha until the naxfc day. For instance : Letters posted here during Monday will not be delivered in Auckland before Thursday. We beg to ask that you will please cause the mail to close at the local post office, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, at 7 a.m., and on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, at 6 a.m., etc. To thia petition we understand no reply has yet been received.
