SENSATIONAL SHOOTING CASE AT PORT MELBOURNE.

A .sensational shooting case occurred on the American ship Earl of Orenfield, lying at the Port Melbourne pier. Captain W~ H. Copp- is accompanied by his wife and two children. At Liverpool he shipped Henry Abbott tor the round voyage as cook. Abbott demanded to be paid off at Vancouver, and struck the captain in the street, for which he was imprisoned ten days. On arrival at Melbourne he became importunate. This evening, after strolhncr on the jetty hewenb on board, and proceeded to the poop, where the captain was standing. He demanded the balance of his money and his discharge. This was refused, and he was ordered off. Advancing within six feet, of the captain, he chew a revolver and hred. The shob struck the captain obliquely in the chest, and glanced off, leaving severe bruises. The captain ran to the cabin for a pistol. His wife hearing the sbot, hurried down the companion way, pushing her children, befoie her. Abbott fired a second shot at" her, just missing her head, but he fired so close that the discharge blackened her eye. Abbott put up the revolver and went ashore. He was subsequently arrested.—
