The "Newcastle Chronicle" says : — The weather was cold, and there was a strong wind blowing acio^s the field. There weie about 1,500 spectators present. Tynemoiith kicked off, aiid after some fast play Gage got over the line, and McCausland landed a line goal. From the kick out Tynemouth pressed to the Maoris' 25 lino, but the visitois hoon diove them back, and some fast play took place near the half-way line. Elliott gob a mark, an 1 after a weak kick a scrimmage was formed near the line. Tynemouth worked their way up to the visitors' 25, and Elliott got possession and made a capital run to the home 25. On being collared, he passed to Gage, who in turn passed to Tairoa, and the last-named got in nicely between the posts. McCausland again secured the major point. After this the game, continued slow for some time until .1. Wai brick got possession and lan thiough the whole of the Tynemouth forwards. The visitors gradually forced their opponents to the 25 line. Herbertson got a good run, and took the ball to the "natives'" 25. Tynemouth then rushed the ball over the line, and secured a minor point. After the kick out Madigan gob away, buc was cleveily grassed by T. Gee on the half - way line. Elliott took the pass and got c. good distance before he was brought down. The visitors had leached the home 25 line when Herbertson relieved with a kick. J. War brick and Gage made some nice little dodgy runs, and took the play within the home 25. J. Warbriek, who i> suffering irom the effects of a broken knee, an accident of four months' standing, took a bhob at goal, but the ball fell short. Some exciting play followed within the home 25 line. Tynemouth broke away and rubbed the ball up to the visitors' 25, but Gage cleverly saved. Half-time was then called the score being two goals and one minor for the Maoris, to one minor for Tynemouth. On change of ends, Lee kicked oft, and after some fast and exciting play the "Blacks' 1 rushed the ball over the half-way line, and claimed a free kick against Tynemouth on the plea of not putting the ball down. Herbertson caught the ball and made hU mark, returning it to the half-way, when Tynemouth forced their opponents within their 25. Tynemouth continued to press towards the Maori line, and secured a minor point. Keogh next got away, and befoio reaching the half-way line to Elliott, who was collared on the touch line by Herbertson. Tynemouth got a free kick just behind the half-way line, and the ball wa.-> sent up to the Maoris' 25 line by T. Gee. The game was now very fast, and Elliott got a capital run past the half-way line, when he was well collared by Taylor. The Maoris gradually pressed,bub Burn relieved by a kick, sending the ball over the halfway line again. Tynemouth continued pressing their opponents, and forced their way up to the 25 line, bub the Maoris retaliated, and Keogh got away again, and reached the half way line, where some very fast play took placo, the ball being passed from one player to another in quick succession amidst intense excitement. Keogh gob the ball and passed toMadigan, who by a grand run got over the Tynemouth line. • McCausland took the kick, but the wind was too strong, and prevented its being converted into a goal. The ball was again kicked, and Madigan had a splendid run round the field, the like of which ia seldom seen in> Northumberland. After dodging all the players ho was at last brought down on the Tynemouth 25 line. From a scrimmage Maynard picked up smartly, but passed forward. Tynemouth next dribbled the ball loosely up to the Maori 25 line, where Arthur kicked into touch. Tynemouth next got a mark near to their opponents* 25 line, but T. Gee's shqfc at goal fell short. Herbertson next made & splendid drop at goal from the field, bu6 the ball fell to one side, and a minor point, was the result). Play continued fast aboub midfield for sortie time after, and from a long kick Elsdon followed up and obtained a try near to the touch line. Burn took the kick, a difficult, one, bub failed to convert. Play continued fast and exciting to the finish, and the gameresulted iv a victory for ihe New Zealanders by two goals, one try, and three minors? to one try and thz-ee minors. Teams : — Maoris : J.
