DETAILS OF NEWCASTLE MATCH.
The " Newcastle Daily Chronicle " says : " The Maoris won the coss, and Northumland kicked off, aud got down the field, but (rage returned. Herbertson pent the ball down, and a return Avas made byMcCausland. A scrimmage followed about the centre, and Northumberland pressed, after which the Maoris gradually worked up the field. Madigan got the ball, but Finney sharply grassed him, Northumberland dribbled away, and W. Warbrick by a clever kick upaet Dodd, and took the ball well up the field. Hands was given, and Warbrick obtained a free kick (under the new i-tiles^, and landed the ball in Northumberland's twenty five. The game was very fast. From a scrimmage Harrison kicked down the field, the ball being returned by Madigan. Northumberland by a loose dribble took t.ie ball within the Maori 25, where some exciting play followed, until Arthur Warbrick relieved by a good kick. The Maoris then got over the halfway line, from which the New Zealandcrs forced tho ball into touch in goal. The kick-out was returned by Madigan. A scrimmage was formed about half-way, and Winship cleverly passed to Herbertson, who passed to Finney, and the last-named got in a good kick. A scrimmage followed about mid-field, and Northumberland gradually pressed, but the Maoris relieved with a kick, transferring play to mid -field. W. Warbrick, by some clever kicking, sent the ball up the field, a minor resulting. Elliott got away, and, after a good run, passed to Madigan, but the latter was collared about the 25 line. Northumberland broke away with a loose dribble, but were checked before reaching the 25 line. The Maoris worked their way up to the Northumberland 25, and from a dribble W. Warbrick picked up and kicked well up to the 25. Again, Northumberland dribbled down, and McCau&land cleverly picked up and dropped over the line, scoring a thiid mioor. From the kick-out Keoglv returned to the 25, and the Maoris got well in front of the Northumberland goal, where the latter got a free kick, (jage got a mark, and McCausland, from a place, took a shot at goal. The place ' was close upon the 25 line at touch, but the Maori back succeeded in sending the ball just over the cross-bar, thus securing the first goal. Shortly after the kick out Herbertson got a splendid run and took tho ball to the half-way. Northumberland pressed and got well in front of the Maori goal, and Northumberland secured a free kick. Herbertson put the ball down to take a place, but lifted it up again, and the Maori forwards immediately rushed upon him, and thus the kick was lost. The home team continued to press to the Maori line. Tairoa and Keogh by good runs took play over the 25 line, and shortly after the ball was worked Co the half way. Northumberland, by loose play, worked their way down to the Maori 25, when the latter again got a free kick, which was well returned by Finney. Winship picked up*|rom a scrimmage and passed to Carr, who had a good run to the 25, but the ball was scrimmaged off at the halfway. Half-time was now called, the score being : Maoris, one goal and three minors ; Northumberland, nil. On change of ends, Lee kicked off for the Maoris, who at once began to press, and shortly after the commencement scored the fourth minor. After the kick out, Herbertson replied by a eood kick/ Gage got the ball, and, after a dodgy little run, put in a good kick. Finney got the ball, and made a grand return, and play settled at half way. From a scrimmage, Keogh smartly picked up, and by a good dodgy run, got within the Northumberland 25, and passed to.W. Warbriek," who, on being collared, passed to Gage. A scrimmage

After this Northumberland rtfpiklly took the ball up to the half- way. itfprbhumberland pot a free kick, and from a place close upon tho half-way line Dodd landed a beautiful goal, the ball beating on A the cross bar and going over.. The cheering on the part of the spectators was longjind ■loud, and the excitement intense. The .Maoris from the kick-off pressed, but again Northumberland drove them back to their own ground. Caw put in a capital kick and sc.nt the ball to the Maoris' '25. The visitors in the loose again began to prepfe, and *' Barlow" got a good run to the halfway. The game continued fast for some time in neutral ground. Carr secured another mark, and Dodd look and placed ; and a good shot it was, but the distance was, not much greater Lban on the previous occasion. Madigan next got< away, but was cleverly grassed by Finney before he got, very far. Northumberland were now in dangerous proximity to the Maori line, and a scrum was formed, and Herbertson gob a good pas*, but his kick was spoiled. The l^ew Zealanders by loose dribble worked tho ball down, and Carr kicked back to half-way. After some loose play Herbertson kicked to the Maoris' 25 line. The latter relieved and took the play to the home 25. Northumberland returned, and again reached the visitors' , 25. The play was very fast and exciting, and by a good rush the visitors reached the home 25. Northumberland forced them back again, and Keogh, by a clever run, again got over the half-line. Northumberland once more dribbled up the field and obtained a free kick near the Maoris' 25 line. Dodd again took a shot from place, but the ball fell short. Time was shortly afterwards called, the result being : Maoris, one goal aud five minors ; Northumberland, one goal. Teams :— Maoris — McCausland, back : Madigan, W.
