TAURANGA ITEMS. [Own Correspondent.]

Taduanga, October 26. The Tauranga School Committee is amply bearing out its old reputation For squabbling 1 with the touchers and among themselves, which has caused it? name to bo repugnant to the Board of Educa* tion, and teachers generally. The present casus belli is the alleged uudue punishment of a pupil by the senior assistant male teacher. Two long meetings have taken, in which the members, several of whom hold other prominent positions, fell very foul of each other ; the county chairman characterising a statement made by the incumbent of the parish asalie, and other little social amenities were indulged in, the Mayor moving a vote of censure on the parson, which was carried unanimously, the parson himself voting for it ! A final decision was carried by the casting vote of the chairmau, condemning the teachers. We are endeavouring now to obtain a bi-weekly coastal mail service by coach between here and Opotiki, passing through Te Puke, Matata, and Whakatane ; this would be a great boon to travellers, who at present must either ride or go by the small steamers which are able to enter the rivers, and which are often subject to vexatious delays through the shallowness of the water on the bars. At the present time the s.s. Staffa is bar bound at Opotiki. A rumour has been circulated here that a capitalist, who has lately settled in the district, is contemplating floating a company to run a railway down this coast, and thus bring all the produce, etc., toTauranga Harbour for shipment. Provided good concessions of land are obtained, it might prove a good thing for all parties ; it is certainly a better scheme than the now defunct Tauranga-Rotorua line. Should any of your readers feel to require a little bracing up and sea bathing, they cannot do better than pay us a visit. The Improvement Company's excellent sea water swimming bath opens to the public on the Ist prox., and the water is now at a most refieshing temperature. Tennis and cricket are in full swing, and boating men are painting, rigging, and generally overhauling, in preparation for the regatta next month. Nothing appears to have been settled yet about our newly discovered corner at Waiorongomai, but our assessors have duly visited it with a view to valuation, and it is assumed that for the future, at any rate, the revenue therefrom will ■ come to the Tauranga County Council.

Bobby (looking out of the window.) — 45 What's the matter with that horse, mamma?" Mother — "The horse is disobedient Bobby ; he won't obey his driver." Bobby—" Well, what's the man patting him for ?" Mother — "Hois coaxing him." Bobby— (with an injured air)— " That ain't the way you tieat me when I'm disobedient "
