OHINEMURI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Paeroa, Tuesday.
The Parkcs furnace lias now been at woik for nbont a week, and is giving the utmost satisfaction. At present it is able to smelt 1^ tons at a charge, and a charge every four hours, equalling G tons per diem. Now, however, that the stack is being raised, the draft will be greater and a larger charge smelted in tho same time. The temperature is extremely hig'.i, so high indeed that it would smelt zinc — an almost infusible metal. Considerable credit is due to both Messrs Chambers and Parkes, the first for his enterprise, and the latter for the skill and ingenuity excercised in the erection of the plant. To Mr Haslctt, the foreman of -works, who superintended the erection of the plant and additions to tlie building, etc., there is also due a word of praise. Up to dato the following ore has been purchased by Mr J, M. Chambers for smelting purposes : Kenilvvorth, 90 tons, value L 9 per ton; Kenilworth, 14 tons, value LI6 10s per ton ; Kenilworth, 5 tons, value L 45 per ton ; Im- j perial, 21 tons, value L2O 5s per ton ; Mammoth, 4^ tons, value LIB per ton ; j Rose, I ton, value LlO ; Champion (silver ore), 5 tons, value L 5 per ton ; Champion (silver ore), 20 tons, value Ll2 10s per ton ; Eose, tailings, 15 tons, valuo L 9 per ton. The parcel of galena from the Tui proved to contain too much zinc and not enough lead to be of any use for smelting purposes. The furnace is still under the sole control of Mr Alexander Parkes. The smelter from Sunny Corner, Mr David Evans, will not take charge until Mr Parkcs has finished. At Waihi Mr Walker has let a contract for the erection of the furnace house toMrJ.Oßrienfor(labouronly)at£3s. The building will be 18 feet high and 4G x 48. The timber is from the Waihi bush, As the preliminaries are approachingcompletion less hands are being required. About 25 were discharged on Saturday last. Ao Waitekauri Mr Cooper is busily engaged over the preliminaries connected with the Jubilee. The machine house will be shortly erected. Better news is coming from Marototo; some first-class ore is to hand from the No 2 or B drive. Three accidents occurred on Saturday last ;Mr J. W. Turner being thrown from his horse and severely kicked at I Paeroa, and Mr W. Morgan, junr., being also thrown from his mare and rather 'seriously hurt at Waitekauri. Mr C. McWilliams also got a nasty spill the same day.
