FIRE AND FLOOD.
A fire in Boston in a large building occu pied by Z. Crumb, Kehew and Co., oil dealers, on September lo"bh, resulted in great loss. The bravery and discretion of the firemen prevented the employees, men,
women and girls, rushing into the jaws of death. The Grand Opera House and several stores adjoining in Syracuse, New York, were burned on September 13bh. A theatrical company lost all its property. The Forb George Hotel, on Lake George, was burned on September 13lh. Loss, $100,000. Forest fires are raging along the shore of Bay City, Lake Michigan, and gob beyond control on September J3th, and many houses, log cabins and other property was destroyed. People fled for their lives. Two families perished. During a severe storm in Western Pennsylvania on September 13th, hailstones measuring five to eight inches fell, , smashing window - panes and stripping orchards. Lightning also killed many persons and injured others. A flood ab Atlanta, Georgia, washed down tho cementing walls several hundred feet, tippling ovor monuments, tearing up tombstonos, and unearthing coffins. Nine persons lost their livet. Two clerks were burned to death in a fire that occurred at Junction City, Kansas, on September 12, in the warehouse of B. Rockwell and Co. The damage by the recent flood in Augusta, Georgia, will reach one million dollars. It is thought 200,000 will be required to repair the canal, streets and bridges Tho cotton mills are shut down, and will be for a month or more. The business portion of Florence, Wisconsin, was destroyed by lire on September 14th. 56 buildings were burned — loss $75,000.
