FIVE WHALESHIPS LOST.
News was received at San Francisco on September 7th, of the destruction of a fleet of American whaleships — the Mary and Susan, young Phoenix, Fleetwing 1 , Jane Gray, and Trio— on August 3rd at Point Barrow, tho most northerly point of Alaska, and themost conspicuous capoof that territory in the Arctic Ocean. It appears that the fleet was detained by a northerly wind tor nearly a month before it could round Cape Barrow. At last, on August 3rd, a strong southwest wind sprang up and drove tho ico-pack to sea. The whalers rounded the Cape, and anchored as near the shore as they dared, and within a cable's length of each other. In the night the wind changed to nor'-west, and the, fleet found itself exposed to all its fury, and one after another was destroyed. Luckily, there was a staunch U.S. revenue cutter, the Bear, at hand, which outrode the gale with ease and was able to save the shipwrecked seamen. No lives were lost.
