The first of a series of sports was held at Waierongomai on Saturday afternoon last, and were successfully carried out. The weather, however, was not all that might have been wished, a cold wind making it somewhat unpleasant for the spectators, but notwithstanding this drawback the sports were witnessed by about two hundred people, amongst whom were a number of visitors from Te Aroha, and surrounding districts. The Government reserve was marked off for the occasion, and suited admirably. The presence of a band would have greatly enlivened the proceedings, which at times seemed " slow ;" this being due to the fact of the entries being taken on the grpund. No doubt the Committee will endeavour to make arrangements for musical selections at subsequent meetings. All the races were well contested, and, in many, a good amount of " form" was displayed. Mr P, Herbert acted as Starter, and ably fulfilled his duties. Towards the close of the afternoon's sports Mr England relieved Mr Clerk for a time, and officiated as judge.
