AN IMPORTANT QUESTION. LARGE PORTION OF TE AROHA GOLDFIELD ASSERTED TO BE IN TAURANGA COUNTY.
The correspondent of the Auckland Herald writes as follows, dated Tauranga Saturday :—": — " A matter of syren t moment to this district and Piako County has just been unearthed, and is causing a good deal of talk here. Late plans, issued by the Survey Department in Auckland, show that a large portion of the Te Aroha gold field lies within the boundaries of the Tauranga county. The matter having caused remark led to its being more carefully looked into, with a rather astonishing result. The Tauranga county boundary stretches fiom Waihi to the summit of Te Aroha mountain, just skipping- the Tui claims, with the exception of the southernmost corner of the Daydawn claim, From the summit of Te Aroha the Tauranga county boundary line stretches in a south-westerly direction along the summit of the range till it reaches the trig station, abreast of Te Puna. This is where the great discovery has been made, for it now appears that the boundary mentioned brings within the area of the Tauranga County nearly' the whole of the claims at Waiorongomai, including the upper portion of the tramway also. It is beyond doubt according to the plans shown here, that the following claims are and have all along been in the Tauranga County, viz., Success No. 2, Werahiko, Silver King, "Welcome, Phoenix, Waiorongomai, Galena, May Queen, Diamond, New Find, N"evada, Bismarck, Colonist, Canadian, Silver City, and Fergusons Special Claim. The belief hitherto has been that all those claims were in the Piako County, which has all along received the gold revenue. The Tauranga County authorities have to-day communicated with the Government on the subject, requesting them not to pay over any further goldfield revenue to the Piako County from these claims till the right of the Tanranga County has been clearly defined. In the meantime the matter is causing deep interest here as it will effect the v local district very materially, and will help to dispel a very popular fallacy that no gold is to bo found in payable quantities on this side of the range. At the next meeting of the Tauranga County Council the question of the recovery of the amounts paid to the Piako County Council instead of the Tauranga County Council will ciop up and be sure to intensify the p'-seut interest."
The report of a curious Magisterial decision, anived at on scientific grounds, comes from the west of Scotland.
