DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES.

The prizos were distributed by Mr D E. Clerk at Murphy's Hotel at eight o'clock in the evening. There was a large attendance and the recipients in each case vveie loudly applauded.

Mr A. W. Edwards announces by advertisement that lie is now showing his first consignment of new spring goods : and invites an early inspection of same. Mr John Hart notifies that Le is now holding a clcaiance sale. See advt, Marototo Gr. and S. M. Co.— The manager, Mr Moore, is now devoting his attention to ascertaining, if possible, the quantity of payable ore likely to be found within this company's area, and if he can make suro of 1000 tons being available, his directois will proceed at once with the erection of a suitable plant on the giound for the treatment of the same. With this obiect in view, a winze 60 feet in depth has been sunk from the floor of B drive, about 150 feet in from the mouth of the tunnel. From the bottom of this winze a drive is in progress, going outwards, whilst from the surface another diive is coming inwards to meetit, and the two are expected to be connected about the end of the present week. As soon as this is effected a rise will be started ybuiit midway in tho block thus opened up, and stoping- operations commenced from both ends of the j rise. In sinking the winze the payable ore lii st started upon from the floor of B drive did not continue down to the full depth, but us the ore exists in patches it is hoped that a large quantity will be obtained as stoping operetions progress. Above B drive the reef is being stoped, but the quantity of payable ore coming to hand is rather limited, and exists in small patches. No work whatever is being done in Aor C diives, but a little prospecting is being done in another pait of the mine, although nothing payable has yet been discovered. • Maiototo North. — In this mine four men are employed driving upon a body of stone known as the Nelson reef. The drive is in a distance of 100 feet, with the reef showing a width of 3 feet, but tbe stone coming to hand is not payable. Marototo South. — The main drive is in a distance of 350 feet upon a large reef, thebtone from which prospects fairly, but ie not payable. One or two men are also employed prospecting in another part of the mine. Operations are also in progress in the Silver Queen and Hikutaia Companies propevties, but with these exceptions very little work is being done in other parts of the district. — Herald. The " Austialnsian Medical Gazette" of August 15th rccoids a case of four children at a birth occurring at Tempo, ncai Sydney. The case is recorded by Dr Brencman, who says : " I examined the children and found them to be as large as the usual 5£ month child, perfectly formed and exceedingly well nourished ; three girls and a boy. The children were all bom alive and lived from two to six hours and a-half." The editor of the " Gazette" adds a note : " This case, though sufficiently remarkable, and one likely to strike terror into tho hearts of nervous maniecl men as to the possible risks they have undertaken when venturing on matiimonj-, does not entitle Anstra* lia to claim the first position as the home of the mother having exhibited the greatest effort to increase the population of her country during 1888, for a case is recorded at Castagnoln, in Switzerland, on the 4th May last, in which birth was given to six children.
