A RAILROAD WRECK. VALUABLE HORSES KILLED ON THE ERIE. THE PROPERTY OF GEBHARDT AND LANGTRY.
The Chicago freight train on the Eiie load was wrecked by running into rocks washed upon the tiacks near Poifc Jer\i» on August 13th. Tiio express train from New Voile clashed into the wit,ek, and the baggage, mail, smoker and one daj coach and a car-load of hoiie^ weie thrown down an embankment) eighty feob and took iire and binned, The passengers were all saved. Alexander Newman, fireman ot Ihe passenger train, was caught in the wreck, and, though not seiiously hurt, was held fast till burned to death. John Kinsell, tre engineer, was scalded, probably fatally. Several others sustained bioken limb-, and otheio severe injuries The horsca in the cai weie thorough bied racers-, and numbeied fourteen. Twelve weie burned to death. The hoises lost were mainly the piopeity ot Freddie (>ebhaidt, but included among them were .Mrs Langtry's black tandem hoi se.s. Quite a stir was cieated in spoi tingcii oles by the new s of the fatal accident to the valuable horses owned bj tlie firm of Langtry and (Jebhardt. Ten horses, of the aggregate value of 8100,000, weio killed in the collision. Mrs. Langtry's £500 whjte English bulldog, tosreJier with several young teniers, weie also sent with the liois.f-. The bulldorr, curiously enough, refused accommodations in the car and insisted on accompanying the tiieman in the cab, The dog could not be induced to leave his new friend's side and was crushed beneath the engine, whiic the fireman -was frightfully scalded.
