Timaru, August 23. A QUEER TRANSACTION.

At the Supreme Court yesteiday W. McSweeny was charged with forgery, lie had made out and presented a valueless cheque for C 9 (signed ' ' W. Anglan " in favour of "W. Anglan ") at the shop of Ballantyne and Co., drapers, and being asked to endorse it, did so " W. Anglan ;" and he says he was the W. Anglan named. He bought £2 worth of goods and got the balance in change. These facts being proved, Mr L. Perry, for the defence, argued that this was not forgery as Ballantyne and Co. relied on the credit of the person presenting the cheque and not on that of a third party. They knew no other than this pretended " \V. Anglan." The charge ought to have been one of false pretences. The Ciown piosccutor admitted that a case cited was fatal, and the judge directed accordingly.

A FRAUDULENT BANKRUPT. Reuben Jones, an ex-publican of Geraldine, was sentenced to six months' hard labour for fraudulent bankruptcy. He had received about £1,000 before he was declared bankrupt, and accounted for only half of it. This closes the criminal fcession.
