A public meeting was hold in St. George's Hall last night to protest against the action of Government in not providing for the prosecution of woik on the Thames Te A roh a railway in accordance with the promise made to that ollect by the Minister of Public Works in April last. There was a very large attendance, and the Mayor presided. Tho following resolutions were carried unanimously :—: — (1 ) " Thai this meeting learns with surpri.se and disappointment that the promise made by the Ministei of Public Works (Mr Mitchehson), in the month ot April last, to a deputation, upon tho subject of the Tham.esTe Aroha railway, who waited upon him in the borough oflicas, viz., that the railway should at once bo made as far as Paeroa. will not be fulfilled, and is of opinion that the construction of other lines mentioned by the Government, which admittedly will not pay working expenses, while costing a much greater amount than is required for the construction of the Thames-Te Aroha line, makes the bread) of faith now complained ot on the part of the Minister inexcusable,as well as impolitic." (2) 'That this line of railway has been under tho notice of Government and the Legislature for the last fifteen > ears. That it received Legislative sanction nearly ten years ago, and the construction of it was commenced nine years ago. That it is an easy and inexpensive line to make, and will sub&erve the passage and goods traffic of a population of 15,000 persons engaged in mining, in tim-ber-cutting, in agriculture and divers other pursuits, demanding supplies ol all kinds, both for tiado and peisonal purposes. That it would biing the whole of the Hauraki Peninsula into connection with tho great trunk line, and would thus become an impoitant feeder to it." (3) " That in view of the actual importonce of the line, and also of the encouragement given to it by so many administrations, and for so long a period of time, that it would be only right on the part of the Government to bring the woik to a conclusion. That the Minister for Public Works be therefore asked to put a sum on tho Supplementary Estimates for that purpose." It was further resolved to telegraph copies of these resolutions to the Premier.
