MINING NEWS.
Thames, August 22. Caledonian. — Now that the drive on Howes leader at No. 3 level has holed through to the winze sunk from No 2 level, the manager will at once proceed with the work of opening up the block upon this leader. A. leading stope will be started in a day or two, and as colours of gold were seen in the winze and drive, the block should prove remunerative. Woodstock (Karangahake). —An interim clean up has just resulted in a yield from 15 tons of 540z. bullion, value over 20s per oz. Waihi. — The winze in No. 1 level is now down 61 feet. The vein is 18 inches wide, and very rich in both gold and fiilvei. One of the calcining furnaces was lighted on Thursday with 16 tons Kosemont ore, and on Monday the quartz should have been cool enough to draw. Cambria. The quartz in the crosscut on No. 4 level is kindly looking, and there is splendid-looking country on both walls of the reef, which is everything that could be desired for gold-bearing leaders. Colours of gold were seen freely through the quarfcz when breaking down the 7th leader. Colours of gold were also freely seen in the fifth and sixth stopes west on the main reef. Twenty seven loads of quartz have been crashed during the week for the return of 690z 15dwt of amalgam. Five loads tailings have also been put through for the return of 9oz lOdwt amalgam. The mine manager wired yesterday as follows : — "Five loads of quartz and 461b picked stone crushed for 770z gold.' The fortnightly cleaning-up took place to-day for Slozs 15dwt3 retorted gold from 461bs picked stone and 54 loads quartz. Saxox. — The stopes on the hangingwall reef all carry favourable mineral and occasionally good colours of gold. The main reef from No. 4 level shows good colours ot gold every breaking. Amalgam on hand, 5050z, lOdwt. New Manukau.— The mine manager reports that he started crushing last week, and the dirt is shaping payably.
Thames, August 23. Trenton. — The country in the bottom of the shaft, which is now down 389 feet, shows an improvement.

Cambria.- — A winze has been started from No. 3 level on No 6 leader. Ib is down 4 eeb.
EXHIBITS FOR MELBOURNE. It has been decided to forward 2cwt. of argentiferous ore from the Silver Queen licensed holding, Marototo, to Melbourne Exhibition. The ore was on view at McGregors auction mart yesterday, and attracted a good deal ot attention, being | rich in silver. An assay made by Mr Rhodes, of Paeroa, gave the handsome retort of £80 worth of bullion per ton. A meeting of mine managers was held yesterday atternoon to confer with Mr A. Porter and Mr G. Wilson, Mining Inspector, with regard to the preparation of mining exhibits of' quartz for Melbourne Exhibition. Mr Porter was requested to communicate with the Government and ask that the whole of the quartz forwarded to the Exhibition be disposed of in Melbourne, and the proceeds returned and devoted to a fund for procuring exhibits for the Paris Exhibbion. The meeting also suggested the desirability of obtaining the two maps of the goldfield from the School of Mines, and also the enlargement of Mr McLarens plan showing the depth of the various shafts, to be sent with the exhibits from this district.
