A NEW ZEALANDER ASSAULTED AND ROBBED.
The folly of strangers carrying largo burns of money or valuable securities about in their pockets and venturing into disreputable quarters (says the " Melbourne Age ") is a matter of almost daily interest. A man named John O'Keafe, a recent arrival from New Zealand, and at present residing at Holly's Hotel, Lonsdale-streeb, has reported to the police that between 6 and 7 o'clock on Saturday evening he was assaulted in a lane offLonsdale-street and robbed, amongst other things, of a draft on the Bank of New Zealand in his favour for £610. He states that whilst walking along the line two men suddenly sprang upon him, seized him by the throat and knocked him down. They then rifled his pockets and robbed him of a purse containing the bank draft, three or four sovereigns and about 15s in silver. Having secured these valuables, the footpads made off as fast as they could.
